Anyone see Northern Lights here?

Your BN editors braved the cold on a few nights but it was not to be, too much low cloud and the light pollution from Kendal was a bit too bright. However, the power of the internet meant anyone with a connection could view the many photos taken by others, and even an amazing time-lapse video at the Aurora Watch station in Sweden - magical! Not much in the way of disruption to all those satellites orbiting the Earth either, despite what was billed as one of the largest solar mass ejections in recent history. Luck, or the possibility of damage over-stated to cover backs if anything did go awry?

Talking of internet connections...

The hardware upgrade of Burton exchange is apparently done, so has anyone seen a vast improvement, or even found it to be worse now? We haven’t seen any change yet, but it might need a tweak of our router to get the benefit apparently - another job to find the time for as our setup isn’t exactly ’standard’ here!

Reminder to those who participated in the speed test campaign that now is the time to repeat the test to find out what improvements have resulted from this upgrade, and perhaps contact your provider to find out if you need to do anything to gain any advantage. Some ISPs are charging extra for the faster speed apparently, but it’s worth checking it out.

2012

This year is set to be a busy one, with various anniversaries and events planned. We all know it’s the year of the London Olympics, and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, and the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic, but did you know it’s also the bicentenary of the birth of Charles Dickens and the centenary of the death of Bram Stoker, so expect to see a lot of literary activities about them. Here in Burton we’ll be celebrating the official opening of our new pre-school toilets at the Memorial Hall. As somone quipped, that has to be a Jubiloo Event!
